The Teacher
Imrat Khan is a dedicated teacher, keen to further the understanding and appreciation of Indian music. He often includes lecture-demonstrations and workshops in his concert tours. He established the regular teaching of Indian classical music at Dartington College of Arts in England where he taught from 1968 to 1970. Since then, he has been invited to many British universities and colleges, and has recorded Master Classes for BBC radio and television.
Throughout the Seventies, he lectured extensively in Europe, also taking
part in music seminars organized and broadcast by various Continental radio
stations, such as RIAS Berlin. In 1976, in Holland, he took part in a two
week East/West seminar attended by composers, performers, and musicologists
from all over the world (the transcripts were later published as a book).
In 1977, he was invited to Berlin as guest of the Deutscher Akademischer
Austauschdienst (DAAD) and was based there for over a year, teaching at the
Musikhochschule, giving lectures and concerts. He also gave a course at the
Musikhochschule in Freiburg during this period and in 1979 lectured in
Venice for UNESCO. During the Eighties he has lectured in places as far
apart as Stockholm University, the Sangeet Research Academy in Calcutta,
Harvard University, the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Bombay,
the Musikhochschule in Karlsruhe, the University of Washington in Seattle
and the University of California, Los Angeles (where he was invited as a
Regents Lecturer in 1983). He has recently been appointed visiting
professor at Washington University in Saint Louis, Missouri.
